In January 1991, the Soviet authorities, using military forces, tried to overthrow the present Lithuanian authorities, which on March 11, 1990 proclaimed the independence of the country from the USSR. On the night of January 13, during the assault on the Vilnius TV Tower and the Radio and Television Committee building, 14 defenders perished, more than 1,000 unarmed persons were injured.
Today, commemorating the defenders of freedom, we wish long years of peace and prosperity to the Republic of Lithuania.
The Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania initiated the continuation of the rehabilitation project for Ukrainian fighters in Druskininkai for 2019. Currently, all necessary documents are being prepared for servicemen to have a possibility to travel to the European Union.
